What is GST?

GST stands for Goods and Service Tax. It is single, unified tax that replaced many old taxes in India, like VAT, service tax, excise duty. GST was introduced on 1st July 2017 with goal of making taxation simpler and more transparent. Before GST, same product could be taxed at different rates in different states, which created confusion for businesses and consumers. GST made tax system uniform across country, “one nation with one tax system”.

GST is consumption-based tax. This means tax is paid by person who buys and uses goods or services, not one who produces or sells them. Businesses collect GST from customers and pass it to government. They can also claim refund (Input Tax Credit) for GST they paid on purchases.

CGSTCentral Goods and Services Tax
Collected by central Government on sale within same state. For 18% GST, CGST is 9%
State Goods and Services TaxSGST
Collected by state Goverment on sale within same state.
IGSTIntegrated Goods and Services Tax
Collected by Central Government on sales between two different states. Equal to CGST + SGST combined
Union Territory Goods and Services TaxUTGST
Replaces SGST in Union Territories like Delhi, Chandigarh, etc

Tax slabs for goods & services tax

A tax slab is rate of tax applied to different types of goods and services. Under GST not all items are taxed at same rate; instead they are divided into categories and each category has specific tax percentages.

Latest Update (effective from 1 April 2026) From 1 April 2026 GST system has been updated and has changes in GST rules 2026 to make system simpler and more structured. GST had multiple slabs such as 0%, 3%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Under revised structure, GST tax rates are now 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%.

What is the GST-inclusive amount?

GST-inclusive amount is total price of product or service that already includes GST (tax), GST inclusive also called ‘’MRP’ or ‘All Inclusive’. This means tax has been added to original priceand final amount. When you buy biscuit pack at shop and MRP is printed ₹30, that ₹30 already includes GST you do not pay any extra. For example, you pay product price 1,180 total (GST of ₹180 is already included). Use GST inclusive calculator to verify amount

What is the GST Exclusive amount?

GST exclusive amount is price of product or service before GST (tax) is added. Means it is priced without any tax, buyer needs to pay base price plus GST amount separately. Forexample, product price is 1000 + GST 18%, meaning total will be 1,180. Use GST Exclusive calculator to get instant total amount.

GST calculation formula

Exclusive GST Add GST to Original Price

GST Amount = Original Price × (GST Rate ÷ 100)
Total Price = Original Price + GST Amount

Example

Product Base Price₹1,000.00
GST Rate (18%)+ ₹180.00
Total Invoice Value₹1,180.00

CGST (9%)

₹90.00

SGST (9%)

₹90.00

Inclusive GST Remove GST from Total Price

Original Price = Total Price × 100 ÷ (100 + GST Rate)
GST Amount = Total Price − Original Price
Original Price

= ₹1,180 × 100 ÷ (100 + 18)

= ₹1,180 × 100 ÷ 118

= ₹1,000

GST Amount

= ₹1,180 − ₹1,000

= ₹180

Product Base Price₹1,180.00
GST Rate (18%)- ₹180.00
Total Invoice Value₹1,000.00
